Land Ho! Funchal, Madeira

After five sea days it was really nice to touch dry land.  It was a beautiful sunny, warm day and everyone was ready to get off the ship and start touring.  We had an afternoon tour that included a bus ride up some really winding, narrow roads to the top of the highest sea cliff on the island.  The view from the top was spectacular and you could see the hillside terraces where they grow all the crops.  This agriculture is all done by hand as they cannot use machinery or animals because of the steep hillsides.  Next our bus took us all the way down to a fishing village that was famous for the fact that Winston Churchill visited here and produced many paintings of the area. Our final stop was at the famous Reid's Palace Hotel for afternoon tea.  This beautiful hotel is over 100 years old.  The tea was very nice and afterwards we toured the extensive gardens before returning to our ship.
We had dinner in the specialty restaurant "Pacific Rim" which has become our favorite.  We lose another hour tonight, ugh!

Sorrento, Italy April 25, 2017

For our last cruise port we visited Sorrento, Italy.  Sorrento overlooks the bay of Naples and you can usually see Mt Vesuvius quite clearly...
